Mastering feed group settings

The settings in the menu item Feed group are one of the cornerstones for feed health assessment and ration optimization with fodjan. That is why we explain here which settings are important and give you tips on the correct feed group setting.

You can find more about creating rations here and more about the basic settings for ration optimization here Basic settings for ration optimization.

Required rights: Writing rights, owner or admin

  1. Go to animal groups in the left menu.
  2. Move the mouse over the desired feed group. 3 buttons appear.
  3. Go to the button “Edit”.

In the upper part you can then make various basic settings for your feed group.

Example view for fodjan Pro dairy cow:

The basic settings are given for the Holstein Friesian breed. If you want to enter rations for other breeds, you can do so here by setting the live weight and entering the corresponding milk yield parameters.

Under the item Category you can make the following settings for the different animal types:

Example view fodjan Pro dairy cow:

The setting of the category is important so that the optimal ration can be calculated, adapted to the stage the animal is in. In each stage (age, fattening phase, lactation stage, …) different requirements are stored. These requirements are taken from the set country feed model.

Further below, you will find the data for the feeding table. Here you enter all values as average values for the group, so that neither high-yielding animals are too heavily undersupplied nor low-yielding animals too heavily oversupplied.

For the feed intake (DM) and the milk yield, a margin of ± 1 kg is then taken into account in the calculation according to the value you have entered.

This is necessary so that the feed health evaluation and the ration optimisation can be carried out sensibly according to various parameters (e.g. feed health, IOFC, nitrogen, …).

Note: For the milk yield, the average value of the group should be assumed that is actually to be milked with the calculated ration, i.e. not only the tank milk quantity of the group that is to be achieved, but also the blocked milk, calf milk, etc. should be taken into account.

Example view of fodjan pro dairy cow:

Max. Number of concentrates (dairy cow, beef cattle) means the maximum number of concentrates to be fed.

Max. Number of feedstuffs (fattening cattle only) means the total number of feedstuffs to be fed.

The information on residual feed and number of feedings is important later for exporting the rations for feed mixing technology (Pro only), when using the “Feed now” function (App only) and for the recipe of the ration. Read also:

In fodjan it is also possible to create concentrate stations in the feed group settings, more about this here.

Note: Fewer settings can be made in the app than in fodjan Pro.

  1. Go to Feeding in the menu below.
  1. Press and hold the feed group in which you want to adjust details until the two buttons “Edit” and “Remove” appear on the right. Go to the button “Edit”.

Here you can change various details. Under “Category” you can set the development or lactation phase.

Once you have made all the desired adjustments, go to “Save” at the bottom right.

In addition to the basic data, further settings can also be made for the feed groups:
